This one is the cardboard from a box of Chapstick, folded and rolled into a ring shape, then wrapped with brass wire, with a coral bead wired in. Then I burn the cardboard, not completely, but just enough to singe it.
Why handcrafted? “Good work proceeding from the whole man, heart, head, and hand, in proper balance” Clearly something was lacking that mechanized labour did not supply. I have often called it the heartbeat in work. Enthusiasm and play of imagination...it is the degree of life force canalized into a craft. The degree; the purity; the intensity. Handcraftmanship, if it be alive, justifies itself at any time as an intimate expression of the spirit of man. Such work is an end in itself and a means to an end. The relationship of truth to beauty -- the seeing eye. (Bernard Leach The unknown Craftsman 95.)
